Stanhopea tigrina

I was given a division of a supposed 'Stanhopea tigrina' and haven't been able to find out too much about how to raise it in NZ conditions...

I put it in a very small pot with spag. moss and a tiny amount of bark... Will the moss keep it too moist?

Any advice is greatly appreciated I would love to be able to flower this crazy creature one day

I grow all of my stans and gongoras in sphag. I would just make sure that you put it into a basket of either wood or metal because they send their spikes out of the bottom of the plant. If it is in a pot it may set a spike but you will never know because there is no where for the spike to go.

As of yet, It only has 1 leaf and 2 psuedobulbs... I suspect it's very far from spiking. Should I keep it in the small pot I have until it seems to look a bit more mature? Or get it into a basket immediately?

I read about having them in a basket but I couldn't find anything small enough...

You can keep it in the pot for a little while. Maybe one season or so, and then I would get it into a basket

Okay cool

What about light and watering? I've just been hiding it under my phal leaves and watering once a week, holding off on feeding though... Don't want to over do it seen it's still a small one.

I keep my Stans in reduced light - a little less than my Paphs, and aim for even moisture, not letting them quite dry out between waterings.

I grow my Stans in a bit more light than my Paphs, but not as much as my Catts, using plain bark as a medium in baskets... I do have a couple of new starts which I've pulled off the older plants and planted them in pots until they are a little more mature... oh and temp wise, they are pretty hardy to low temps (7 celsius - keep dry) and high temps (45 celsius - water, water, water)

Apparently it is around 14 months away from flowering so I might leave it in the small pot I have for around a year, and by then hopefully it'll be big enough for my hanging thing.

After hearing they don't like to dry out, I increased watering to every 5 days and that seems to have encouraged a new leaf sprouting pretty fast!
