Silly Flasker's new assignment

While on a cypripedium board a few weeks ago I noticed a poster offering to send some seed for cyp californicum to a couple of lucky people. I am from California and recently working with some cyps. I contacted him and he agreed to send me seed collected from two different plants he pollinated in the wild.

One plant he nicknamed "Thousands" (first picture) because he counted 700 flowers on it. The other one he calls "Big" because it is one of the tallest cyp californicums he has ever seen. "Big" is over 3 feet tall and average is 18 inches to 2 feet.

I received the seed today and in, oh, five or six years I should be posting cool Cyp californicum flower pictures!!!!

I wish I was set up for flasking, but low, I am not. Atester on this board will be doing the flasking for me.

Maybe a contest to see guess how many of the seeds will make it to germination?


CORRECTION: 'Big' is nearly FOUR feet tall!!!!

Cyps are tough to grow in cultivation - good luck with it, Steven!

I got some reginae seedlings this last spring. They grew well for me in my plant room. I have aquired a couple of larger and flowering sized plants of a couple of different species. I have a good mentor that is guiding me along the way.

I was just thinking that WHEN I get them to flower if they follow their genetic path, one REALLY tall and the other with LOTS of flowers, that it would be cool to cross them to get a REALLY tall plant with LOTS of flowers!!!!!!!
