Last year, I bought these two pretty Gramms.
One is a Grammatophyllum scriptum 'Phelps Farm' x Self and the other was a Grammatophyllum scriptum var. citrinum.
Due to my lack of knowledge about this genus, I somehow caused both plants to completely defoliate last winter and I ended up with two sets of naked pseudobulbs.
So I potted the pseudobulbs into smaller pots and used small orchid bark with a 1-inch layer of sphagnum moss on top.
From January to April, the backbulbs just sat there and I thought they were ready to throw in the towel.
However, this photo from June shows two tiny growths peeking from under the sphagnum moss. Those are 4-inch plastic and clay pots.
The var. citrinum is on the left, the 'Phelps Farm' clone is on the right.
At this time, the pseudobulbs still had no roots. I can literally pick them up from out of the pot and see no roots.
This is a picture from July, the var citrinum is at front-center, the 'Phelps Farm' is just behind it.
A few days ago, upon inspection it looks like the roots were starting to fill up the pots. So I decided to repot them into wood baskets.
The var citrinum had thinner roots and fit into a 4-inch wood basket. The 'Phelps Farm' clone has thicker roots and had two growths coming out so I planted it into an 8-inch wood basket.
These plants can sure grow roots! From no roots to full pot in just three months. These plants are starting to scare me.
Now I just need to make sure they don't drop their leaves in winter again.![]()
