It was very windy and chilly at the farm yesterday. However, I guess the plants loved it. Plus, the two small clumps of Dendrobium junceum had hundreds of blooms, each. The blooming season's first Dendrobium anosmums were out.
I was happy.





I may have to do a separate posting on variability of Amesiella.

I had been having "stickiness" problems when posting photos lately. Has anyone else experienced this? Pasting the url a dozen times before the photo "sticks" to the page?

Lovely junceums, et al, Nelson!

I have a D. Adastra that I give a hard winter rest to. Its normal season for blooms is Feb-Mar. But I only ever get a single flower off the new growth.

Clearly my hard rest is too hard. A friend with a greenhouse said don't water it from late Oct to the first sign of growth in the spring. But she has good humidity, and in the winter my windowsill doesn't.

What would you recommend, Nelson, in a dry winter environment, to encourage more vigorous blooms come early spring? An occassional watering, misting, pointing out to it non-performers who recently croaked... Or would it be more fert during the growing cycle, which is now past? I tried to do that more this year.

Dendrobium adastra, a Dendrobium aphyllum x Dendrobium anosmum offspring, is a plant I am not familiar with. However, considering its parents, I would not water it during the winter.

I have some difficulty in replying to questions like this, because my own plants are in an area that is close to their natural habitat. All they receive is water, practically. No fertilizing, and an occasional insecticide spray when the leaves or blooms get too eaten up, or when scales show up.

I would not know how to grow them in an area like yours. I am sorry.

Nelson, I'm guessing you're environment isn't nearly as dry as my winters here. I'm going to try and up the humidity for my D. Adastra and see if I can't coax a few more flowers out of it in Feb.

I think that is the same plant that has been photographed for the 2008 calendar, that has been annotated by Jim Cootes.
