1 off my first 'chids.
Actually managed to get the spike straight & then get a nice arc with the flowers.Flowers are upto 4".
(Note Paph chamberlainianum got in the act as well)

Tell us your secrets for getting such a nice spray of flowers.

When 1 of my Phals(or relatives) spike in the growroom(6 so far since Fall) i leave them in the same place & i don,t support the spike until the first buds form.
When i have it staked i move the plant about 12" back from it,s normal position & the end of the spike tries to go back to it,s original position , hence the arc.My Phal(Brother Passat x Brother Stage) has screwed up my normal plan by sending out a second spike just as the first flower opened

I have several that have done that this year, and it is a pain to deal with. although,hubby said what a problem to have....double spikes !

I have moved my poor phals around so much they are dizzy....I thought the greenhouse would promote straighter spikes and it did but they also grew too tall for my shelves in the sunroom, so I put most back in the sunroom to let them wander where they could...because if I don't ,they will have to stay in the greenhouse where I can't see them as well...

Funny, that also happens to me most of the time, specially with white phals. One flower facing the other way. What I do is I train the spike to grow upward as it grows longer with careful staking. If you want that graceful arc, the stake should be just below the first bud, and yes you can move it farther away from where its growing in order to make the spike bend and hopefully, it grows longer than normal trying to reach the light. That way, there will be more spacing between the bud so that when they open, the petals will be just side by side, not overlapping.

Very nice and well grown phal Uncasteeb . I am hoping for some similar show from my remaining phlas this spring.
