Do most Phals flower in the Winter? Or are there some species that generally flower in different seasons?
In my experiences of basically hybrids they spike when ever the conditions are suitable.
If you have enough leaf growth & the plants experience some cooler nights they spike.
My mum has a Phal noid that has been in flower since May '04(only 2 flowers left but it has thrown up a new spike is flowering.
I have 1 that i cut the spikes off , put it in s/h & put it outside for the summer & it spiked in 5 weeks.
They basically spike anytime.
doritis pulcherrima is a summer bloomer, and if I recall, phal violacea. their hybrids may tend to have that trait too. your classic traditional phal sets spikes with the cool days of autumn.
In my experience the spring is a huge season for phal blooming, both my own and greenhouses visited, but that's a very fluid definition. Spring could be Feb-Jun. Many plants also have minds of their own, and phals can be such long bloomers that they throw they're own sched off if they're really big and healthy and bloom more than once a year for extended periods.
I'd call Spring phal season, but I wouldn't hold any one plant to it!

I agree regarding the hybrids , most of my specie Phals. are later on . Your pulcherrima blooms ! mine must be crossed with a dumb cane it just sits .Gin
try msu fertilizer. i think it really works wonder in making flowers. and also grow under lights. these two things i discovered in the last two weeks.either one of these has made my healthy phals to bud quite profusely in the last couple of weeks...it is amazing, i cannot explain. either it is time or it must be these two new elements i introduced...
I actually do use the MSU fertilizer. I guess they need the temp differential in the Fall to bloom (they don't get it inside)?
