Paph Wardii

This Paph is the slowest thing I've ever seen, and it's taking forever to open fully, but it is in bloom. I've been holding off posting photos, in the hope it would open all the way, but frankly, I'm not so sure that's going to happen. Not sure if our very cold (for Florida) weather is affecting it, or maybe because it was supposed to take two years to bloom, but was in bud within six months after I purchased it.

So, if it should open further, I will post more photos, but for now, without further ado, I give you my very first grown from scratch, Paph Wardii bloom. TA-DA

I think these guys are just really sloooowww. Unfortunately, my dark colored one got too dry when I was on vacation and the bud blasted . It was about 1/3 open. These guys don't like to dry out when starting to bloom. My alba one was shipped to me in bud last year, was very dry, and promptly blasted when I received it. The good news is the alba set another growth and has a bud in the process of opening. Amazingly, didn't blast while I was gone and so far so good . But also very slow.

Susan, I'm so sorry about your buds blasting. Before I left on my two week holiday, I made sure to fill the pan under the Paph with plenty of water, and then I stood the pot in it. I was concerned about possible root rot, but knowing this one loves its water, I decided to take the chance. The pan was dry when I got back, but the Paph looked great and had started to really open.

I'm still hopeful this will open further, but I'm actually thrilled to have gotten it this far.

Well, sadly, it appears this Paph is not going to open fully. I don't know if our weird weather has been affecting it. First we were freezing and I had the heat going full blast, and now I'm back to a/c. In any event, this is what I woke up to this morning. It's so sad looking.





And it's looking even sadder tonight.

Thanks Bruce, but I'm concerned at the way the sepal is now bent over and in fact is touching the pouch.





It was straight until this morning, although not totally upright.

Do you still think there's hope?

Is it still 'stiff'? If so, gently flip it up. If it is soft, then it may have been damaged by the temperature issues you mentioned. You will know in a day or so if it was damaged because it will start to spoil.

If you don't want to touch it, you could maybe make sure it is in bright light and see it that helps it to stand up correctly. Good luck!

Thanks. It's soft. I'm sure the temperature changes didn't do it any good at all. I'll keep an eye on it, and hopefully it will be brighter tomorrow. We had a deluge today.
