Ludisia Discolor and Cattleya Maxima Suprise

I went to just sit and visit an orchid vendor/friend. Since we began our move I haven't had time to sit and visit anyone. It was a nice day and I had extra time for a change. As I went to leave my friend handed me this nice Ludisia. I've always thought they were pretty. I hope this one grows well for me.





As I looked through my shelves for a nice shaded spot for the new ludisia I was pleasantly suprised to find another section of Maxima in bud. I don't know how I didn't see this spike...I guess i need to slow down and smell my flowers. lol

Nice surprise with the Maxima. I'm sure the Ludisia will do well for you. They are very forgiving.

I hope the Ludisia does well for you too.Their leaves are so pretty - can't say the same for the flowers though. I have never been successful with them because they like cooler conditions than I am able to provide.The ones I had were personally collected from the highlands. Years ago they were plentiful and I sometimes trampled on them unwittingly. That really made feel very guilty. By the way they grow in the same area as our Paph barbatum .

Lucky you! ludisia also called jewel orchids are grown for their beautiful foliage than the flower

I bet you can do well with the Ludisia, Connie. The one we have here blooms every year. The flowers are not so pretty, but it is still fun to see the plant put up a spike and bloom. Ours grows in regular potting soil with a bit of redwood bark. It seems to do well in the shade and kept damp.

If it does well I have a spot on the side of the house that would be a nice spot to plant a few. Maybe i'll move it indoors and treat it like one of the baby dens i'm growing.

The place where it grows wild here is on Kedah Peak about 5000ft elevation with temp 60 - 75 F the whole year round; annual rainfall 90 ins with a distinct dry season Dec-Feb. Hope this may help you decide whether to grow them outdoors. Also growing in the same areais the other 'jewel' Anoectochilus.

Thank You so much! Knowing the growing area for a particular plant is very helpful. I think I will keep it indoors with a drip bowl so I can keep it wetter when it needs it.
