    Default Catsetum NOID

Bought - and I still have the label attached, as Mormodes variabilis. Iknow that means variable, but it can't vary quite that much !. I'm sure its a Catasetum species , and if and when I find time to trawl all through e.g. IOSPE I will find it ; whilst a lot of this genus are indeed variable - consider Imperialis in green, white, yellow and red forms.. the curious red shape down the lip, like the chrysalis of some wonderful butterfly , must be very diagnostic. A spike of 5 flowers on a young plant, first flowering. I only started in on this group of orchids a very few years ago, and what a lot of amazing things I had been missing - although you may not actually like this flower - I am not sure whether I like it, or am afraid of it (!)- but they certainly are striking.

looks like catasetum tabulare (but the callus look smaller than the usual tabulare)...might be var rhinophorum but the callus looks too smooth for a rhinophorum.
just suggestions.......i din't even have any of those before,,,,just been seeing a a lot of catasetum picture on the net. good luck

Thanks - OI have looked at yjis on IOSPE and the shape seems spot on ; the main pic there ( not "anotherclone" ) doe indeed have a callus similar in size, but of a much duller colour everywhere. I have just remembered that there is a National Collection of this genus in UK, I'll send a pic to the grpower and see what he suggests.
    Thanks again.
