Ascocentrum species ?

Pics are of a plant I have grown for a few years , and which I now see has two labels ... One says Asctm miniatum and the other Asctm. curvifolium. Is it one of these ?

The leafspan is 10 inch max ; you will note the deeply channelled leaf ( curvifolium ?) and surely this is too large for miniatum in leaf-span ? My other examples of A.miniatum are nearer 6 inch span.
Flower size is about 3/4 inch or say 2cm. and maybe it will end up with 30-40 flowers. Of course it could be grown better - The leaf length as compared to that in previous years tells me that. ( Probably I give most of my orchids too much light in summer, I am beginning to think. Maybe another layer of shade cloth will be good thing.)







And also IOSPE never mentions yellow as a flower colour for either -although Iam of course aware that there is a range.

What do other members here think ? Which label to discard , or both ?

No idea Geoff, I have a plant which is very similar to the one in your pic but the guy who sold it to me claimed it was an Ascda..Im rather confused when it comes to the vandaceous plants..

Geoff, I think it's an hybrid. I don't think it's an Ascocentrum, the petals are to wide and your plant is to large.
My Asc. miniatum is flowering now.

Can't help with the identity, but that's a beautiful yellow color. AL

I remember buying that, and having a discussion about Professor Sagarik ( a man I much admire ! ) - the guy I bought from had started a nursery as a side-line, and was Assistant Prof' in the Botany Dept., at one of the (many) Chiangmai Universities - he had been a student of Prof. Sagarik, I think. Most likely you've hit it. Thank you Yew Sung.

I think any Ascda has to be bigger in all proprtions - leaves and flowers.

I too used to think all my plants weren't getting enough sun because they weren't blooming. Lately I have discovered a couple of my plants started blooming when I pulled them back into my oncidium corner areas. Fussy orchids. Whatever you end up calling this one, it's very pretty. If you didn't live on the other side of the big pond, i'd have to sneak over and raid your orchid houses! lol

I had the privilege of meeting Professor Sagarik, albeit very briefly, at 3 orchid shows, when I was a novice show judge and and he was leading one of the teams of judges. But it was at an orchid show in Haadyai, that the true character and quality of the man, known in Thailand as the 'great teacher' shone through. He made every judge give his opinion on his choice and reasons for doing so and the ensuing discussion/argument that followed were very interesting.His guidance throughout was most illuminating and that session alone with him taught me more about judging than all the previous training I had.Thai orchidists owe him a great debt of gratitude. It is no accident that Thailand is among the frontrunners of orchid production and research.
