sheffalera (sp)

here is a bloom of the "common" houseplant up north that we use as hedge and fence cover here. It's a verigated small sheffalera (spelling) We have a large one as a tree but it's not currently in bloom. When the large one blooms I'll try and get a picture as it is really a very interesting blooms looks like big red fuzzy helicopter blades.

And red helicopter blades sounds great... I've always just thought these were green all the time.

Well, I'm sure it doesn't hold its own to one grown in the heat and humidity of the Keys, but here is my "Minnesota Grown" Schefflera capella on the patio (which will need to come in tomorrow as the low is supposed to be 38-40 F - brrr!)

I also didn't know they had blooming spikes like this...I wonder if it has to be a certain age/size to develop these or if it simply has to do with growing conditions?

That is the same plant we have all over the place MDE. The bigger version actually becomes a tree. I did find some old pictures of it that I had when it was last in bloom but you can't see the color unless I really mess with the brightness and contrast. It's very hard to take a picture of something against a bright sky. But they are on my web page I'll post one here after I play with it so that you can see the red.

I'll be &*#$ I didn't know they bloomed either , I remember someone saying thiers bloomed I thought they were talking about a diffrent plant . Gin

I always thought the tall ones with the red flowers were called Umbrella Tree and the other one well, never really knew what it was called...

They aren't the same exact plant but belong to the same family.

We've got a couple of the patio-sized ones. I never knew they bloomed either--which is to say, ours never has! This is great, Wolf. Thanks for learning me some, too!
