Hi -
No - you should not be seeing or smelling anything bad! What medium are you using, how long have you had them in S/H, what fertilizer are you using, how often do you water/flush them? How do the plants look, aside from the smell?????

HI
I am new at semi hydroponics myself (about 2 month), but I haven't had this problem. Maybe you use too much water??
Just an ideea......
or maybe there is enough air between the LECA pebbles....
I will think about it...
what I ment is not enough air between the LECA pebbles
your collections are amazing Andrea,i'm the one who's moving all orchids to S/h.i found out today that the new root under neath are white, possible they still young and some putting air root over the media.i'm speaking for all my Catts.
Maura...after i have a new BBQ area,i moved all my orchids in the green house and again move out some to my new corner that cover with the shade cloth, some still in green house.the good news is some has new growth and new root,my Catts still far from blossom but it's o.k for me.i stop buying new orchids since last december because i want to see how they are doing in this condition.
the medium im using are leca.. most of my orchids had been in semi hydroponic for 6 months, its growing new roots and new leaves at the moment. i flush is once a week or sometimes once every two weeks. and everytime i flush.. it kinda stinks.. oh and im using liquid fertilizer with and some seaweed extract.. im asuming that the smell is from the fertilizer im using...?
Hi
As I allready said I am not an expert on semi-hydroponics
my guess it will be that is the seaweed extract that turns blacl and smelly (seaweed does smell on the beach isn't it???)
you should check if it is ok to use in hydroponics
I am usind a 2 professional solutions for orchids for growth and blooms
the only additives I use are the crushed shells for extra-calcium for my cymb seedling and paph Lowii
you could try stoping the seaweed for a couple of weeks
if the flushed water changes than you know for sure
good luck
I'm with Andrea, I'd venture to guess it's the seaweed fert you're using.
thank you! will deff. stop using those!!
Can someone PM me recommendations for online vendors of these types of containers? I've only found a couple and their shipping prices are less than desirable
