Oncidium Lanceanum

I found this plant growing on one of the trees in my backyard. Oddly enough, I thought it was the Oncidium Luridum because that plant was originally growing in that same spot on the branch. Yet I am not sure if this is a hybrid and this species of oncidium is not common where I live. The Oncidium Luridum grew there and that species is commonly found on the trees in the nearby forest, so I assumed that a seed from a lanceanum blew across a great distance, landed there and germinated.

How long ago was there a luridum there? Did you take it down? It would take several years to get a lanceanum to blooming size. Your photo definitely looks like lanceanum to me. How about a shot of the foliage? It would be pretty unusual for one to show up via natural causes in Florida as they're endemic to S. America (Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador) and offshore in Trinidad. Have there been any hurricanes that covered this area and ended in Florida in the last 5-10 years?

I live in Trinidad on the Northern Range. It took less than 2 years to bloom and yes, the oncidium luridum still grows on the branch. The luridium also grew there naturally and it has been there for the past five years. I will take a picture of the foliage in the morning.

Trinidad is such a wonderful place! I have visited twice, I especially like the Asa Wright Center, there are wonderful trails to hike to see birds, flowers and insects. And the people are so friendly.

So there you go, it's native to where you live! I have no idea why I thought you lived in Florida?

The one I have took until it's fourth growth to bloom but I suppose they are much happier growing in a tree in their native habitat!!

My Onc. lanceanum is currently hanging on for dear life and undergoing an experiment to try to save it. I got it last year, it spiked about a month after I got it, but I barely made it to the first bloom opening and I discovered root rot which I think must have started before I got it? At any rate, I put it in a semi closed baggie with moist sphagnum and hung it in the shade outdoors all summer. The foliage continued to look healthy but not even the slightest hint of a root. I then moved it to a pot with wet sphagnum in the bottom and dry bark on the top to try to coax it to send roots out and down towards the moisture...NOTHING. So now it is mounted on cork with a bag covering it to maintain humidity. It has a new growth just visible but unfortunately the stub of a growth hasn't done a thing for a month or two. I'll post a picture of it tonight after work and see if anyone has any suggestions. I even tried rooting hormone without any sign of a new root?

Living here in Minnesota I'm very jealous of your Trinidad climate! Gin has dead leaves on her trees, but I have snow on all of mine! LOL.
