Big box babies (mini-phals)

I went to my local Enormous, Generic Home Improvement Store today to pick up a couple things for my non-orchid flowers, and got charmed into buying these as well:



Mini-phals are the plants that finally won me over to liking this alliance. The variety available these days is wonderful -- 5 or 6 years ago, these would have been hard plants to track down, at least as far as I know. Now they're just right there on a shelf when I'm not even specifically looking for them.

LOL I cannot go into any of those darn stores without bringing home something. The baggie babies are my favs. You may want to get those out of the solid container and into either a plastic pot with lots of holes, or clay with good drainage. While that vase looks nice, the roots need more air. I use the vases they come in to sit pots in for display around the house. Keeps drippy pots from ruining the nice tables. Btw, the pink phal is to die for...i'm kinda nutz for pink/purple flowers. lol

I know, on the stupid obviously-just-for-looks pots. They make a pretty package, but it's not good for the plant! I'm planning to repot them after the blooms die off -- I hate to disturb them with buds on. But maybe I should?

The pink is more intense than that pic shows! I should take one inside, out of the glare of the sun, to show you. And the yellow makes all the flowers look like they're glowing. How long do you suppose it'll be before we can get blue Dtps in stores like that, huh?

I think you can repot them without doing much harm. Just be gentle with the roots and don't disturb them too much. I always feel it is better to repot into a medium that drains well and I fits with the way I like to water the orchids.

Yeah, the blue orchid thing is funny. Who would want to make a perfectly nice white orchid a crazy blue color??
