Encyclia prismatocarpa In Bloom

For the Encyclia lovers out there in Orchid Land I thought I would post a couple photos of what many consider to be the showyest Encyclia of them all. In 'captivity' these plants can bloom at almost any time of year. This orchid has grown big for me. Unfortunately of twelve buds eight blasted this time, versus three full spikes back in May/June of 2011, but there is one more spike coming up which probably won't be flowering for a couple months now. Last year I withheld water in late winter for one month and the blooms followed. This last October/November saw the plant start several new growths and as by winter these were not mature I did not shut off the water....................I thought this was better for the orchid's overall, long term health. I hope this information for those interested is helpful..................AL

Thanks for your kind words people. Connie, I do agree that even when not in bloom it's a handsome plant. Bill like the pharoahs I plan on taking my orchids with me to the next life. Of course I guess that means you'll take advanced class in "Tomb Robbing" and rescue the poor critters! AL

A very beautiful Encyclia that has never bloomed at home. I gave it to a friend.
