Thank you for this post Julie. I sure you will do the best choice following the given advices.

I have a question more.
I have a roths which now has a mature growth but still no spike.

If I miss flowering, do I have the chance to see a spike growing from this same mature growth later (next year for example) ? Or do I have to wait next growth?

I paid $145 for a single growth , flowering size no-name P.roth so £175 for a descent P.roth division seems like a pretty good deal.

I've been hunting around quite a bit and have compared photos of some of the newer FCC crosses, and Jason's right - the differences are astounding. Size and color, particularly.

Hi Phillippe,

Well, are you sure that your rothschild has truly reached mature size? Leaf span of at least up to 3 fts is needed for the plant to bloom with a single growth! If not, the plant would need a mature growth and a new growth. Light is another requirement for Roths to bloom. Once they reach mature size, they need very strong light without burning the leaves, very similar to the light requirements to bloom standard cattleyas in order to bloom.

So you like the Angel Hair, eh! I want that one too. It is one of those beautiful sanderianum hybrids (this grex is St. Within x sanderianum, and St. Within is rothschild x philippinense). Actually from the picture, the petals of that plant is much longer than other Angel Hair plants that I have seen so the sanderianum influence must be very strong on this one, and that is quite unusual. As such, the sanderianum plant used to make that cross must be a very exceptional one! So now you know what I mean by "multifloral paphs"! I hope mine will bloom soon, couldn't wait!!!!

Leave span is not far 3fts (5 cm less i think).

Maybe the light is not enought. Now it is under flosrescent light

Hi Philippe,
It appears that your plant is close to blooming at any point. So give it more light. Natural light is best of course. One of our orchid society members showed off his roth a while back. It was a single growth plant but really really huge and was in a big pot (lot of roots)! And definitely, it has more leaves than yours. Maybe your plant has more growing to do before it would bloom.

Now the growth has one more leave since the last summer, a little bit shorter than the last one.

the contrast is turned way up in those photos, thereby artifically accentuating the coloration. but the new roths are certainly much deeper in color than the old ones. a few years ago roths from the US breeder of 'Rex' x 'MM' went for around 300 bucks in spike, for first-bloomers. that's probably about fair market value.
