CRAP! Just knocked over my zygo - rooting question

So, I just knocked my zygo off the counter and broke the new growth off that had been doing exceptionally well My question is: can orchids be propagated like other house plants? If I stick the broken bit in some water and rooting hormone, will it root? I'm SO BUMMED about this!! Ugh

Zygopetalums usually throw up more than one new growth per p.bulb so don't be too upset i'm sure it will now divert its energy into a new baby bulb

I did this a few weeks ago with my zygo. I was moving it and bumped it on another pot...snap. I am not too worried. These seem to put out many growths.

This is horrible, but it happens. I was moving my bird of paradise into the greenhouse for the winter. It was in a three foot round two and half foot deep pot and was about 6 or 7 feet tall. That was until I hit a hole with the dolly, it slipped off and broke the whole plant off just about the root mass. I literally cried. I have been growing that plant for 15 years probably. I put the roots into the greenhouse and am hopping that it will put up new growth from the roots, but not a leaf was left when it broke off.

Ali, Your Zygo should come back. Put it back into the same location where it was, keep moist (not wet) and it will survive.

@ Bruce. So sorry to hear of your topple. No worry Strelitzia (Bird of paradise) are pretty hardy. It should spring again from the rhisomes. Of course I am speaking from a place where they grow like weeds outdoors in the blazing sun. But take a dose of patience and I am sure you will report that it is on it's way again.

Don't be too bummed! It should put out another growth. If you are lucky, the plant will panic and put out two!

I decided to downsize my Bird of Paradise a few years ago as I just couldn't manage such a big pot anymore. I tried to cut off the smaller growths but mangled them. No problem, they grew anyway. I was impressed. Hope it recovers its former glory quickly.

ditto the crane flower which is refered to by my South African friend also grows like a weed here the neighbour has a clump 8 meters wide and 6 meters high amazing display right about this time of the year

Don't worry, Zygos tend to be unruly growers, I don't think it will be a problem. Just some added frustrastion of the type "are you blooming yet? are you blooming? pleaaaaase bloom!!!

@ Bruce - I don't have the heart to put a like on your reply, I feel for ya man! But hey, look on the bright side: you'll have a manageable pot again (at least for a while)
