    Default Ionopsis utricularioides in bloom

Hi - this little sweetheart has just been blooming and blooming for weeks now. It hangs on the inner wall of the lanai here, where it gets medium-bright indirect light. I spray the roots once a day, and water it thoroughly about every 2-3 days. It's a very young one, with the old growth not looking so hot (left too much in the sun, I think), but the new growth seems healthy. I just have to be careful I don't overlook it when I'm tending the monster Catts!

I understand these are notoriously short-lived, but I've seen pretty good-sized specimens. Anyone know any tricks to making it flourish?

Southern Florida is it's northern range. If you are in that area, you should be able to keep it growing outdoors. I had one that came from Puerto Rico. It lasted a few years for me and then died

Almost picked one of these up at the last orchid show but held off in favor of a couple other minis. I would imagine, Maura, that the key to longevity will be finding out what conditions will lead to it producing keikis.

Cute flowers. For any who might be interested ... just a bit of side trivia here ... the species portion of its name refers to the flowers which bear a strong resemblance to the flowers of the genus Utricularia -- a type of carnivorous plant with very intricate bladder traps (hence their common name "bladderworts"). For any with a hankering to see more: utricularia - Google Search
