    Cool Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi

    During the winter I lost another spike, but it's still blooming and blooming. I don't know but it may be time to throw a few more styrofoam pieces in there. It seems to like this haphazard potting scheme so far.

    This plant was an experiment and I'm not sure all phals would appreciate this type of growing media. But for this species that i'd usually only killed before; it works just fine. I got the idea after being in a long neglected nursery where the plants thrive in spite of never being repotted in 20+ years. While I skimp on potting, be sure I don't miss spraying for fungus and bugs with my "neglected" group. So far as long as I remember to spray like Cathy told me a couple years ago the orchids grow and bloom like clockwork.

    Well done Connie small plant but many spikes it's sign of that you taking care of him in a right way.

    Looks good, Connie -

    I've seen Phal. cornu-cervi thrive both in a sphagnum pot and mounted with scarcely any medium at all. It seems as though getting the overall moisture (watering plus humidity) is a key factor. I'm not at all good with sphagnum and phals, so I'm fascinated to watch how yours goes.

    I have issues with watering too much...so I stay away from sphagnum as much as possible. Lucky for me this one is so hardy...

    Exactly - and what really confuses me is when I see a phal thriving in soaking wet sphagnum!

    I think it depends on the plant myself. I repotted about a half dozen phals today. All potted exactly the same...in sphag...some had amazing roots, others awful. Who knows?? lol
