Nakamotoara Newberry Apricot

The flower most definitely got the "Apricot" in the name due to the color. I have had this for a couple years and had begun to think it would never bloom. To help the roots hold moisture, in spite of the roots running up and down the plank of wood, I added a small piece of basket liner hoping the extra moisture would allow the plant to bloom and apparently it worked.

nice!!!! mine will have its first blooms open soon... maybe another week or so? mine was not doing well in bark mix in a plastic pot, so last summer i moved it into a 6" treefern pot, filled with a mix of sphagnum moss and loose treefern fibers. it really perked up over the winter. did really well outdoors, takes after the neofinetia culturally i think. i usually see them in moss only.

Thank You! That is so nice of you to say. I try to explain the things I do to help others with the same issues. And I've turned part photographer lately taking pics of every little thing that catches my fancy. lol Most people find my "long winded" tales abit much...and i'm often told I talk too much.

I took to mounting my smaller vanda on wood planks a couple years ago and found they seem to like it. If I put too much around roots, due to out high humidity year round I would lose roots so I have to go with a more basic approach. Often my humidity is 80% or higher, not something most people have to deal with.

right connie, shows you how much differently we have to grow things here in dry as a desert southern california. i did manage to keep a renanthera alive over the winter that is just in a plastic vanda basket, but we're talking misting the roots every single day at least once. way more effort than i care to go through, at least for much more than like 3 plants! when i spray the plants, you can watch the water evaporate, and they are dry within 15 minutes, unless it is cold outside.

The vanda I have issues with are the terete vanda. I sat my latest into a plastic pot that has a small plastic plate with holes at the bottom that keeps the plant above a well of water. I am seeing much better results and seeing new roots grow. Something with these I usually never ever see. I also usually keep plants that like a ton of water hanging or sitting over dirt/cement blocks and usually closer to the ground. I have also used large dirt filled plastic pots to sit under the vanda section for the humidity it adds. I have way too much spare time and I end up trying tons of strange stuff to try and make the plants happier. My husband has learned when I begin mumbling to myself and go flying out the door, not to stop me to ask what i'm doing. lol

Such beautiful and unusual colour for a Neofinetia cross - the normal ones we have here are mostly white or in shades of blue. I will be on the lookout for one of these apricot/peach coloured Neos.
