Need help before it's to late.. or is it already??!!
I have I'm assuming a pretty mature orchid that is now getting soft at the base of the leaves. There were six leaves when I recieved it from a business changing out their plants. I am now down to three leaves. The leaves are not turning yellow throughout but are getting soggy near the stem of the plant. I assumed at first that I over watered and that caused the leaves to fall off. I've been doing either 2 ice cubes every seven days and/or 1/4C water, as well as checking for dampness of the planting material. There are three spikes coming off of the main stem and produced flowers on the top stem when I first recieved the plant. Flowers budded and looked like they were about to bloom on the lowest spike before they decided to turn yellow and get soft, then fell off. The plant in my novice knowledge of orchids was mature because of the many spikes that came off, and seemed to me when I first got it, that it was in a pot that was way to small. I have roots almost climing outside of the pot, as well as having pulled out a few that were dried out. PLEASE.... if you can help me to not kill this potentially beautiul orchid, i would really appreciate the feedback. I am an experiecend flower/veggie gardener but for some reason have such a hard time with these plants. I respect their needs and just want to give it what it needs to thrive. (I live in MN by the way, with no central air and no heating, other than baseboards. As well as the plant beign placed where there is very little sun. This may be my problem as well, just let me know).
