Masd. sanctae-inesae

I just got a number of new plants from a Canadian grower (mostly Onc. alliance), but their greenhouse manager was also a Masd. nut. I don't grow Masd's because I don't have the humidity they want, but I did buy one for Lisa up at the Dartmouth greenhouse (a fellow Masd. nut.) The plants arrived late Monday and I was headed out of town early Tues for two days, so I made the Masd a makeshift Edwardian case out of a tupperware container.

I got back this afternoon, and the little critter has bloomed! (I was afraid after bareroot shipping for 4 days, the bud would surely blast!) Anyway, here he is! Tough little goober!

That same greenhouse manager also sold me a Lycaste from her own private collection. She spoke lovingly of it, and I could tell it was special, but she felt it was time it moved on to someone else. The forth pic is the plant, after I potted it. I had no idea Lycastes could grow so large! It's a beach umbrella! The leaves are as long as my arm and about 10" wide. I can't wait for that guy to bloom!

that Lycaste is big enough to eat the kitty... I love the blooms on them but cannot imagine giving up precious Paph space for em...

great thinkun on that wardian case too... just goes to show, you don't need hundreds of dollars to give these critters what they want...

The Edward Tupper case is a temporary abode - that Masd is destined for a more attractive showcasing than I can provide. Still, it's cute. And I haven't killed it in the last three days, so maybe someday one of my own...

That lycaste is a monster!!! That is why I try to stay away from them. But you can always afford to have one in your collection. After they drop their leaves, they don't seem to cause too much trouble. Hehehhee!

How hot are you letting the little guy get?

Er...um...this is my first little guy. How hot shouldn't he get?

He's in the kitchen (appropriate for the case), which only gets indirect late afternoon light. I figured the plastic will further filter the light.

It's maybe 75 in there. We haven't had hot weather and that room gets little direct sun, so it's not bad. The top is partially covered, but room for air exchange. Was trying to hold in the humidity.
