What is sib an indication of?

When a plant has a cross of "sib" listed, what does that mean? Specifically, I noticed my Onc. splendidum x sib. Google didnt help much. What I did noticed was that the Onc that did have it, like papillo x sib was alba. There was another too, but Im not sure enough to confirm my speculations.

basically "sib" indicates that two plants from the same pod have been crossed.It is normally done only with species or varities of species.Another way to write the label would be 'abc #1 X abc#2' or 'xyz X self'

xyz x self would be a selfing. sib implies that the parents are related (usually from the same pod) but two different plants.

There isnt anything in there about sib crosses...

Also, you should consider the tribe / sub tribe breakdown for your classification paragraph. Spatulata dendrobiums are in a section, for example, section: Formosae or Latouria. Thus would be section: Spatulata.

Thanks for pointing that out! I know in some draft I did discuss sib and self crosses (I have it on my computer), but certainly not in this, the original. Sorry - I thought it was in there!

The bit on the Dend. sections was correctly pointed out by Tim just afterwards in the thread. I corrected that in a later draft that I used elsewhere, but if I edit the original here, it will make his comments nonsensical.

Sorry! For making you read that, just to not answer your question! Jason and Murray already had: "Orchid ABC x sib" means a seedling of orchid ABC was crossed with another seedling. As long as the parent names are the same, it's a sib cross, even if the sibs are from different genrations of plants, and not really siblings from the same seed pod. That can lead to a bit more variety, but that's still the convention.

Orchid XYZ x self, means a flower on a single plant of XYZ was pollinated from another flower from the same plant. That will ensure much more predictable results among the offspring, hopefully for the good!

I can update it, if folks think it won't be too confusing, given subsequent posts. Let me know.
