    Default Laelonia Dave's Dapper Dandee

Laelonia Dave's Dapper Dandee is a cross between Broughtonia negrilensis and Laelia crawshayana and we didn't know that it had a name until someone in this orchid forum pointed it out two years ago.

It isn't difficult to grow but the flower quality can vary drastically in that the colors mix into each other at times and the flowers get speckled/muddy. It varies from year to year and I don't know what causes the problem. Maybe it is just the trait from Bro. negrilensis that makes the the coloring of the flowers less distinct.

This year five out of seven flowers were OK and I show the best ones here.

Thanks. I guess I never mentioned that the plant is mounted and the flower stem is arching more than two feet horizontally. Every year I'm wondering if I will find the flower stem with its pseudobulb on the floor the next morning but the plant seems to be strong enough to take the burden.

Neither species is much used in hybridizing, especially L. crawshayana, but clearly there is some potential. Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

I have the same problem with a similar cross. The spikes are more than 2' long. Last year I broke two off when the mount fell and I tried to grab it. This year so far so good. Hard to find window space for it.

I guess we are fortunate to have such problems. Some people have a lot of space with a lot of orchids without flowers.
