I have had a similar problem with an Oncidium- "charlesworthii" - actually an Oncidioda I think, although after all the re-naming there are no less than 3 different hybrids which are all correctly called Onc. charlesworthii now, and I forget which one this particular plant is . In my case, the leading bulb has two spikes, both branched quite freely, and the first to open on each branch has some petals missing. It is either genetic - in which case it will always do it, or it is culture, and if the plant is grown differently this year, then it will be different when it flowers. I'm not sure whether I shall keep it to find out, for I am not very happy with the rather dingy red colour of the flowers. I have too many plants (always) so it is actually good to find a plant I can dispose of without feeling the loss.

I'll keep this one. It grows quickly (7 new pb's last year) without getting too big and flowers well. Only two of the flowers have been bad so far and I picked those off. Hopefully those will be the last.
