I've never looked up the specie... But they are small, very very dark brown, almost black. You find them out in the brushy areas of the hills.
Got this off a bug Web site:
Assassin bugs are appropriately named because of their habit of lying in ambush for their insect prey. With speed and accuracy, this bug uses its long "beak" to stab the victim and then inject it with a lethal toxin that dissolves the victim's tissue, then it sucks up the liquefied tissues through its long beak
Assassin bugs are aggressive and not afraid to attack creatures much larger than itself. They will inflict a very painful bite to humans if handled carelessly, causing a severe reaction in some persons. The beak is rather large and the beast can manuever it very quickly to not only impale its victim but to inject toxic venom.
Diane has simply watched too many mummy movies to care for large beetl-
Aaaaaiiiiieeeeeeee!!!
He got me.

Looks like those mummy movies were right! Beetles can hurt you. Hmmm flesh disolving venom, and me alergic to bee stings...Originally Posted by Piper

Scary but cool!!!
Actually, this is just the kinda thing that I need for my Pest assignment at school... i need to get 20 different bugs, freeze em, then impale them.. how cool would something like that be to show off!
of course, seeing as I am actually afraid of that one... it would prolly just chase me of!
Don't forget the cautionary tale of the praying mantis, Tim-O!
Including predacious bugs with antifreeze in their veins is harmful to your project!

WOW!! I think I would scream like a girl and then make my husband go kill it.

Mwhaaahhhaaahhhaaahhhaaa!
He might not return...
[Scream like a girl again here.]

Oh come on, Tim ... considering how many truly dangerous critters live in your neck of the woods, you surely can't be scared of this little fella!?
If it is any consulation, Di, as the affects of assasin bug venom are different than bee venom, you likely would not have the same reaction.
