Odontobrassia Billabong parents?

I got some pollen from a friend of mine, that he took from his "Odontobrassia Billabong", I was googling to find the parents of this plant before I start pollinating anything, but I can't find any info on the plant! Is it just some complex hybrid from the Netherlands, that no one really know anything about or did I just get the name wrong??

Hi Christian,

I've checked the RHS orchid registration website and it looks like Odontobrassia Billabong was registered in 1990.

The parents are Odontoglossum bictoniense and Brassia gireoudiana.

What are you planning on crossing it with? I just googled for a pic of it and it's a nice looking flower... really nice coloured lip!

I was thinking of trying a cross with my Peggy Ruth Carpenter if that could be a match? I'm quiet new to this, but arent they all from the Onc alliance?

In any case I'll try and see if it'll take It's a really strong and good plant, currently with 4 spikes and 3 really healthy SB's

You are correct that both the Odontobrassia Billabong & the Peggy Ruth Carpenter are Oncidium Alliance plants and, therefore, they should be crossed quite easily.

I'm sad to say it didn't take Poillinated 2 flowers, and both of them just dropped yesterday..

But another interesting thing: When I pollinated the Peggy Ruth the mad scientist in me took some pollen from the nearby Dendrobium (Noid) and pollinated yet a flower on the Peggy Ruth... And guess what! It really really looks like a winner... The flower stem(?) is starting to swell, and is turning dark green. Should this at all be possible!?

You're right, it shouldn't be possible. And it probably isn't, despite appearances. Dends and Oncs should have very different chromosonal counts.

If a seed pod does develop, I'm quite sure the seed will be sterile. A developing pod is a good sign, but doesn't guarantee viable seed. Still, it's a fun experiement! Keep us posted!
