    Some time ago, not long after Steven joined the forum, someone here sent a surprise orchid gift to another member. I don't remember the occasion or the individuals involved.

    Steven PMed right after it happened and asked, "Is that what you guys do around here?" I answered, "Yup!" I was proud to say that, because it affirmed how really special our gang of folks here, and the environment Bruce and Louis have gifted to us, are. Sure, we all love orchids. But we care - genuinely care - about each other, more. In an Internet environment, where anonymity promotes faceless, impersonal communications, our caring is even more spectacular and special.

    I got a surprise package today. It was addressed to Julie McHelper. And inside was a good-sized Phal Aurelia Franklin in spike, and some tiny little thing I still have to identify, but I think it's carnivorous. What a wonderful surprise!

    I'm not sure what prompted your lovely gift, but I'm very grateful. And I'm also very glad you're one of us!

    I don't know about you Elena, but I am thinking of emigrating to the land of generous orchid growers.

    I just googled Aurelia Franklin, and it is a lovely yellow. Enjoy your new blooms McDonated!

    Ah! I see your dinner guest arrived. Hope you liked the packing beans too. hehe

    Yes, the little one is a carnivorous plant: a sundew. I bought ONE recently and now I have many little seedlings and root suckers. I would offer more to others but I think it would cost as much to send priority as it would be to buy one locally. I was really worried about the little tyke and I hope it arrived with its arms and legs still intact. Keep it in fairly high humidity for now, but it can and should adapt to an open environment.

    As far as the occation of the surprises: McPsycologist, do you remember a series of pms or emails we exchanged a few weeks ago? They helped me greatly. She has a REALLY comfortable couch by the way!

As I unpacked the meticulously packaged plant, with no threat to a long spike about to burst forth into bloom thanks to the careful packing, I chuckled evilly to myself, and wondered if others laughed, as I do, at the packing peanut mess they'll wreak when the "gift" is unpacked at the other end?

    As I pack a shipment, I always love the visual that will ensue! Mwahaaahhaaaahhaaaa!
