Finally, I went to the local (Albany, NY) orchid society meeting for the first time. They had a great speaker/grower who had some plants for sale, and this is what I came home with. This is a miniature Dendrobium that fits in an over sized mug on my kitchen window. It makes me very happy every time I look a it. I hope I don't kill it.

Oh CONGRATULATIONS!!! I have a mini dendrobium and I ABSOLUTELY adore it! This one is exceptional though- how gorgeous are the markings! I think you will love this plant- mini's have this special quality of being as magnificent as the larger orchids, yet in smaller sized packages...They are just as intricate, yet even more delicate and tiny.

I keep mine in bright light; it only gets about 4 hours of cool direct morning sun a day,since I have an east-facing window. It likes to dry out, but I do mist it every day just a bit; it seems to enjoy the attention. I also fertilize every other week with 1/4th strength fertilizer...some may suggest more, but I've been accused of "loving" my plants to death, so I try to minimize the love, I guess ;-)

Den. atroviolaceum is from the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and the Louisiade Archipelago off the tip of New Guinea. It was first introduced into Europe in 1890. It's a member of the Latouria Section of Dendrobiums, which have some of the most spectacular and weird flowers. Den. spectabile is also in Latouria.

Thanks for the Latouria info, McJulie, I have a spectabile as well...but it's also a year or more from blooming size. However, it's the happiest of my dens!
