My little questions!

After the experiment with Epidendrum from cuttings finished with good news, I decided to try with Miltonia and another orchid (tell me what specie is that)! Here are the pictures of new cuttings, the left one is Miltonia, and I want you to tell me what orchid is that on the right? Is it possible to get thees plantlets survive and get new roots? What conditions should I give them?

And, another problem with Phal! I have taken it in the greenhouse! I was out of home for a few days! When I returned, I saw that one leaf on Phal has become soft and a little wrinkled on the edges (but no signs of browning)! What is happening? In the greenhouse Phal have much more light (filtrated), and much more humidity! Unfortunately, there was no air movement in greenhouse! Maybe it's soil dried out too much? Is it possible that is the reason?

Excellent news on the Epidendrum.

I have a feeling the chances of the miltonia rooting is slim. They don't have the same growing habit as an Epidendrum and we don't usually take cuttings. They usually send roots from the base of the plant and I can only imagine it surviving if it sends a new growth out. But you can try by diping the base in rooting hormone. Next time I suggest that you take a division instead, you will get a blooming sized plant faster.

I think the other orchid is a dendrobium. If it is a dendrobium, when you pot the elongated pseudobulb in a pot it may send out new plantlets or keikis from the side(the meristematic tissue is where the blooms usually form or where the old leaves attached to the cane). I think this one will more likely survive than the miltonia. Plant it in sphag moss so that the meristematic tissue touches it and you will get new keikis.

I am unsure of what happened to the phal. It sounds like to me that the plant got dried and was stress out from the extra light. Usually we slowly increase light levels

slowly in a greenhouse!

Unfortunately there is no sphagnum to buy here in Montenegro! Can I use simple one? That grows on a rocks and keeps water well!

If I understood you, Dendrobium will send new growth from the base of the leaves?

Yes from the base of the old leaves that have dried up and removed already. You can see that there are divisions on the cane.
I think you can use the sphag you find, it just needs to be moist

Why are leaves of Epidendrum sutting so red?

I'm thinking this could be one of several things: 1. Sunburn, 2. Nutrient Toxicity, or 3. Nutrient deficiency.

I'm sure the other orchid guru's on the forum will be more helpful and more likely able to identify the cutting's condition. I would, however, try to assess some things about the cuttings, if you know anything about the parent plant:

1. Was the plant kept in full sun? (I'm not 100% sure this could be it; usually sunburn spots really look like a burn; while your leaves are all-over purple)

2. Was the plant over/under fertilized? What type of water was used on the plant?

I know you have cuttings, so you may not know the condition of the plant they came from. Let's see what the others have to say :-)

I don't think that is sunburn! Light is filtrated and not too bright! I haven't fertilised this cutting (how can I do that to one cutting with no roots), and I used that simple water!


I think that happened because the cutting is creating a keiki's which are taking it's strength and because of that it is drying! I think that is normal! Let's see what will hapen with Epi. in future!

Some Epidendrum species (and I assume some hybrids) are known to turn green leaves either purple or red. This is due to an increase in sun exposure. Most reed-stem Epidendrum are SUPER EASY to grow, easier than Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis. They grow quickly, mature quickly, and become a weed problem in a matter of years. The leaves on the cutting will most likely die off after a while. The new growth will most likely be short, but will develop more growths that are slightly more mature.

I'd have no hope for that Miltonia cutting... and it looks like the Dendrobium cutting may not work either. If the Den. does work, it will be a very slow maturation process. Try and keep your orchids more intact

Woohoo! I noticed today that on Miltonia cutting, there are new shoots, and one new root! Please tell me in what should I pot her? What mix is best for Miltonia?

On Dendrobium are also started to appear new buds! I'll post a pictures!

Trere are pics... I've mounted Epidendrum, and puted some moss on that little root!
