yellow "ground orchid"

I'm sure many of you have seen this plant for sale, maybe even bought it, but I can't find out what it is... store said it was a ground orchid but it's not like the purple ground orchid we're all familiar with. It also comes in red/orange colors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, thanks so much!! Googled Epidendrum Radican & mostly came up with orange, but it looks just like mine, flower-wise... so guess it gets that label

So many beautiful orchids...so little porch/windowsill space! What a pretty one, I was guessing Dendrobium....lol....shows what I know.

Definitely an epi - nice clean yellow collor. Most of the hybrids are red, pink, peachy colors. Very happy looking plant.

The epidendrum "radicans" has taken the same path as the generic cane dendrobium sold at grocery stores.
Since this plant is so easy to pollinate and has a relatively short turnaround time from flask to bloom, they are now available in several different colors and substance - but no one has bothered to register the new crosses.
So they are all considered epi. radicans for discussion purposes, but technically NOIDs since the true parentage is rarely documented.

BTW, it looks like yours has a seed pod already. It would be fun to flask it and see what color your new plants end up with.

And they are impossible to kill. This one still bloomed after being tossed into the compost bin


From my experience, they are not true "ground orchids". They fare better with semi-terrestrial mixes. True terrestrial media tends to choke the roots and they end up shooting areal roots. This results in the plant being top-heavy and without bottom root support.

In looking for info about Epi. Radicans, I also came across info on Epi. Secundum, which, to me, looks just like radicans... anyone know the difference?

This may be the reason mine went from fantastic bloomer to occasional bloomer, sending out aerial roots high up on the stems..... I used regular potting soil I'll repot this weekend.
