Have another cool Maxillaria getting ready to bloom as well

Unfortunately, Ron, your bloom now presents me with a bit of a conundrum .... I went back and dug up a pic of my Max. triloris -- and it looks NOTHING like yours. (Mores the pity as I really prefer you flower.)

I suspect that the species you have is cuculatta. Cuculata is a smaller plant 6-8" tall, flower spike 4" high, single flower on a spike, petal span 3-3.5", solid green leaves. Does that description match your plant? Here is a pic of my cuculatta. I have seen ones with darker lip like yours.

Unfortunately not. *sigh* The leaf is about 8" long, pb about 1.5 inches, & it does only have 1 flower/spike, but the flower is only about 1.5" not 3-3.5" in span.

Hmmm, upon checking on online species encyclopedia, it appears that it may indeed be Max. cucullata. According to what I read, the flower size apparently varies considerably -- anywhere from 1.5 inches to over 3.5 inches. So although mine is an underachiever, it still fits in that specie's size range. Color also varies greatly. (The red form and the yellow form on that site are both very nice.) The pic on that site even has the super dark lip mine has.

that is what I suspected. I would tag it Max aff. cucullata
