Though startling if you don't know it is there, a snake simply means that it was either eating mice or insects, etc... or looking for a place hang out that was safe. It is always a good idea to make sure that it is not poisonous though. If you see it again, and are able, snap a photo to post here or get someone who can identify the type of snake it is. If dangerous - remove it. (If not, then remove it or not. I carried the last one we found (well it actually found me!!) in the greenhouse off in a bucket and let it go at the back of my property near some woods. I posted the photo here and Steve and Paul both identified it as a common rat/mouse snake and harmless. It was actually doing me a favor hanging out in the greenhouse. I don't regret taking it away, since my fear of it actually caused much more damage than it did being in the greenhouse. lol. I knocked over so many plants and tossed a seedling across the room. haha...
