Hi,
I'm new to this forum and to growing orchids. Went a little mad after visiting the WOC held here in Singapore this November and bought a couple of cattleyas, oncidiums and some other random orchids which were too hard to resist. Thanks for the video on repotting orchids; the cattleyas seem to be doing well.
Desperately need help with my encyclia cordigera. After the flowers dropped, I unpotted it and discovered the roots were not in good condition so I put it in a plastic pot with coconut husk chips and threw out the sphagnum moss it came in. Subsequently 1 of the 3 pseudobulbs started to rot so I cut it off and sprinkled some cinnamon powder on it. The 2nd pseudobulb is also brown but since it's still firm, I left it alone. I also put it in a claypot with charcoal. Not sure if I've got it right this time.
Should I have cut the rotted section all the way through (ie roots as well)? Should I remove the 2nd brown pseudobulb as well? Does it need to be potted deeper into the pot with the roots covered or is it ok to leave it exposed? There's a small shoot (? or eye?) growing by the side of the healthy bulb and I'm desperate to save this plant.
Carie
