Was watering this evening and discovered two of my remaining 5 Phalaenopsis plants have very early spikes! I couldn't believe it! I had long since written them off. I have a horrible track record with these things, having sent at least 4 to the world of landfills in the last two years, probably because I've never invested more than a few dollars in them (have only gotten the cheap hybrids from the box stores which I think are usually stressed into blooming and are deceivingly unhealthy despite their healthy appearance when you get them?) I've also attributed it to a curse. Seeing these make a comeback has rejuvenated my spirit for them (only a little, we'll have to see how they grow out before I wet myself from excitement.) I'll try to remember to do a f/u when they mature and open buds. I have absolutely no idea what stimulated them finally? Perhaps the cooler temps (house temp is falling to low 60's now) or the decrease in light? Heck, who cares, I'm just pleased to actually have a couple of spikes on the things which have appeared dormant for the last year or more.
