I had this lovely coral Phal Orchid and bought it from the store. At the time of my purchase I was still very new to the care of my orchids, and the severity of my climate and its effects on my orchids here in NV. As I have now learned i MUST cover all my roots with whatever medium that matches what it came in. Not to mention that I have learned to take out a certain amount of medium from the flowers when I purchase them because, for some reason my suppliers pack my flowers sooo tight, and they rot very easily here from that as well as it being of pure dryness. On to what caused this, I believe I followed what my orchid wanted as far as watering due to the fact that it flowered for an incredibly long time. I think that the dryness here caused the exposed roots at the base of the foliage to wither away hence leaving me with these thread-like roots attached but at the bottom, beneath the rotted roots they look lovely and green and are even sending out new growth roots. i am afraid without guidance i will lose this flower forever and i just love this one. i have 20!
