one orchid i know people love to hate - reedstem epidendrums. i used to have a ton of the old tall, sprawling bushy things when i had more space. even the old hybrids have clusters of bright colored flowers, and year round here too. they were killed off by bugs. i've been getting some of the newer hybrids, much smaller growing, and bigger flowers even, but they don't seem to flower non-stop like the oldies did. but what a huge family of ugly orchids. some do have nice bright flower clusters, but have you seen the less common species of epi? as an epi lover, i still gotta ask, what is the point of so many of them? they have tiny little green flowers that are hard to spot. and sellers want big bucks because they're 'rare' in cultivation. i always picture some old lady pulling weeds form her garden and selling them to idiots here in america because we think we're getting something unusual. yeah, a tropical weed that grows 12 feet tall and has itty bitty green hard to see flowers. i've seen prettier milkweeds.
