I bought an Oncidium "Sharry Baby" from an auction site and when it arrived I was disappointed. As this is my first Oncidium, I just want to make sure I'm not jumping the gun before I complain to the seller.
The plant was described as "LARGE - BLOOMING SIZE" in the auction title. The seller didn't give any info in the listing as to pot size or number of pseudobulbs, and I just assumed it was mature and ready to bloom. I probably should have asked the seller for clarification.
It arrived in a 2" pot with 2 pseudobulbs that looked like they were either very young or were already bloomed. I couldn't tell because there was hardly any foliage on either bulb. The bulbs were also "shrively" looking. Not sure if this is normal. Here's a closeup of the bulbs. Do they normally look like that?
One of the leaves started turning yellow, and others have some funky black spots, so I took the plant out of the pot to inspect the roots (they were fine), but then I couldn't get it back into the small pot without damaging the roots...so I've repotted it into a 3.5" pot.
Here it is in its new pot. Does this plant look "LARGE - BLOOMING SIZE" to you?
Am I misinterpreting something here? It would seem to me that this plant won't bloom for another year or so...doesn't it have to grow a couple more pseudobulbs and foliage before it will bloom? Or can it bloom on this small amount of growth?
And last of all...there's some wacky looking spots on the leaves that don't look like the innocuous spots on my other plants...one of the leaves has actually split in the area of the spots. Is this something I need to worry about or is it just normal leaf spotting?
Thanks everyone! I don't want to go off half-cocked and complain over something that isn't a problem, so please tell me if this is really a blooming-size plant or if I got...ahem...scr$%*d.
Thanks!
