Thanks for that info, Angela! I recently acquired a Vanda Pachara Delight, and apparently the only method of growing vandas that seems to work for me in my climate is vase culture (which ironically turned out to be WAAAAY easier than any of the other methods I was torturing both myself and the plants with!) But anyway, when it arrived, it came in a 4" basket with bark, but the roots in the basket were all rotted, and the Vanda was relying completely on a gigantic, sprawling, several-foot long root "web." You should have seen me trying to figure out how to put those roots in a vase without damaging them!
Well, as it turns out, one of the roots did get cracked, and now that particular root seems to be shriveling. But, basically you're saying that I can snip it off before it rots in the vase without worrying about damaging the plant, since the plant will still have a ridiculously long and tangled root system left anyway. That's a bit of a relief. The root isn't completely dead yet (I'm trying to nurse it along), but at least now I know I don't have to feel TOO guilty if I need to remove it. That's good news!
