Tall Bearded Iris
There's a family-run business in the Pacific Northwest that sells the most stunning tall bearded iris. Spikes can be up to 40" tall, producing 8-12 flowers that are 5-7"! I had some at my old house, but didn't know where I'd be moving, so when I sold the house I didn't bring any along with me. Last summer I broke down and bought some more rhizomes.
They ship in July for this part of the country, since that's when they need to be planted. Then you wait for a year. Well, they've just begun blooming and they're simply spectacular. I have 9 different colors, that will bloom over a period of about a month. These are the early ones.
The pics aren't the greatest - it's been raining here for forty days and nights. I'll try and post more as the various guys bloom. Tom, my black cat, thought you might like to see his butt!
