Spilothanta sp - aka Masdevallia...
I am amused that on this side of the Atlantic, the taxonomists are busy lumping together as many genera as possible into single ones - thus the "new" Cattleyas which could be what I would call Sophronitis, Schomburgkia, or many other things, never mind being an old Cattleya. , and similarly,the new Oncidiums. All in search of "scientific truth" ignoring the horticultural reasons for wanting different genera. But on the other side of the big pond, some - Carl Luer at least, is busy doing the exact opposite. What was once Masdevallia is now 20 different genera. Thus, Spilothanta now contains those (ex Masd') plants which have many flowers in two rows, on a single stem, all open at once - quite different from other Masdevallias. I prefer this approach, it makes far more sense to an orchid lover and grower , and to hell with molecular biology. I can't see the DNA - and even if I could, I coul;dn't tell one genbome from another - I can tell the difference between a Spilotantha and say Masdevallia coccinea.
BTW the top pic is Spta polysticta, the next is S.pozoi, and the third is Sp.lehmannii.
