It's kinda what I'm thinking but in my experience and watching how my orchids grow, they seem to prefer crowded spaces. Take for example some of my Cattleyas in 8" pots. They seem to put out new growth towards the rear of the pots instead of the inside where there's more room. ... and that's where they have a tendency to bloom. I have a lot of pots like that and here are just a few. But I wouldn't re-pot it again at this point in time!
