Paph taking the plunge

You can water plants in s/h every day if you want to. There are built in air spaces in the media and the new roots are "water roots"...

I'd had 2 paphs in my life, and both of them went into S&H and then sat there for almost 7 months and did nothing...I was really sad. Of all my plants in S&H, these performed the worst...and they are supposed to be the best for S&H! Maybe I didn't water them enough, I'm not sure...but yours look really awesome!! I'm encouraged by your success, maybe I'll try again :-)

Here's the picture I promised of the Paph. Minnie May x Maudiae 'Clair de Lune' that I've moved to S/H. It has just started a new growth and it looks like the roots are holding up fairly well.

I've also added a picture of the Phrag. Randy MacDonald new and very new growth. It's in sphag with some wisconsin moss on top. The sphag is pretty much wet 100% of the time as it sucks the water up from the tray it sits in. It's doing pretty good so far.

I've had mixed success with paphs in s/h but most phrags really seem to love it. Multifloral paphs seem to like s/h just fine for the most part, but for me parvis and brachys detest it. Maudiae-types are so-so, with some doing well and others not. I suspect that the cool/wet root zone during the cooler months may be a significant problem for the plants that don't do well in s/h.

I concur with what Jason said...I have killed a lot of brachys and parvis in SH..yet I see others grow them with no problems. I found it is best to go a little drier in the winter /cooler months on all of them.
Also, a mature plant does so much better than a seedling for me. Paphs are the teachers of patience ...they are sooo slow to grow !

It looks like the Minnie May x Clair de Lune is liking the S/H, even though its roots are a little too black for my taste. However, there is no way to argue with two growth at the same time. One of the two old leaf fans is showing signs of disintegration but with two new growths who's counting...
