I recently potted a medium in size cymbidium in s/h. So far it has been in s/h for 2-3 nmonths. It is potted in hydroton pellets in a plastic pot with a small water container, and used a much larger plastic pot filled with styrofoam peanuts, one layer of plastic weed protector and then hydroton as a topsoil.
Here is a before (late february) and after shots (august) of the same cymbidium. The roots have taken to the new enviroment *very* well, ie there are many many healthy new roots adhereing to the pellets. The plant has shown much better progress compared to standard phals converted to s/h, with minimum or no slowness of growth. As you can see it has new growth (from new bulbs) everywhere. It's happy on vacation on my western balcony with lots of light.
It needs a lot more water now in the growing season, but I seldom water it (maybe once a week) as the roots seem moist.When it was in bark, its roots where white and almost starting to wrinkle every 2-3 days. It's now probably one of my orchids that requires minimun attention compared to my fussy divas (species phals)
