Fruit Flies?

I have tried the Venus fly traps without much success, Think I read somewhere they require a dormant cool time ?
The pitcher type work ok . But the best knat catchers have been the sundew or butterwort . Can't really let the plants that like wet to dry out like Phrags. ect .
There are sticky traps (yellow cards) sold that will catch them , might do a search on the big G . also plain fly ribbon will if you can put it where it does not end up in your hair Gin

I looked online about these gnats... I moved the plants that had them, away from my Orchids. Then put some apple cider vinegar in a tiny glass.(my room smelt like a sweaty old sock) but I found gnats had drowned in it some days later. The fly strip reminds me of when I was little and our cat got all tangled and glued in it... it works but looks really disgusting hanging there...

Thank you! If I get any sticky traps instead of or in addition to carnivorous plants, I will be careful with my hair! That hurts just thinking about it.

As for the fungus gnats, I've sprayed and hung yellow sticky cards and even gone to systemic stuff and they just won't go away. I've even repotted EVERYTHING and still they just love living with the chids and me in the GH....I was thinking of charging them rent.....5 nats/day too much??????????


After posting I see once again I seem to be a day late and a few gnats short!

At your local garden center or big box store, you can find yellow sticky traps...It is like a sticky glue card. It comes with a stick that you attach it to. One end in the media with the card hanging from the other end. That will catch the bugs...I would change the medium in the aloes...sounds like that is where they came from.

Sharon,At the very large retailer they have Clear Tape traps.I do not have alot of gnats.These seam to be working well.I just cut a small piece of plexiglass and used this to place the tape on.I have two traps on each shelf.Good luck,Rich

I have been away for a while, so good to be back! Last time I was on I was using the apple cider vinegar trick... yuck. Then a woman told me wine?! Not aloud in the Zen Center... and don't need drunken fruit flies. I still have them, but not so many with the Orchids... when I moved the aloes they mostly went with them. I did re-pot them, and they are not leaving! Thank you for the suggestion of sticky fly tape on plexiglass. I will try this next!
