Hibiscus

I think Hibiscus are very nice shrubs but being I live in the northeast I have only room for one tropical one. I do have 2 Hibiscus syriacus though. These are deciduous shrubs with the common name of Rose of Sharon. The white one has a nice crape-like substance. The pink one has been munched. These are taken for granted as common garden shrubs but there are some beautiful cultivars on the market. I bit of the tropics for the colder climes.

I love these plants.

I grew up with one at my grandmother's house that was at least 12" feet tall and would be covered with light lavender blooms all during the summer...it was a "hardy hibiscus" of course....the tropical ones don't live in the ground here either

I'm sure you know this, Ron, but there are winter hardy Hibiscus. I don't believe they are anywhere as breath-taking as these but.....

These 2 are winter hardy hibiscus. I do know there are ones that are 8-9" across as well, that are winter hardy...different species. They are in bloom now as well.

Growing up in the Philippines I took for granted the numerous varieties of hibiscus plants that grow freely there. There were a broad range of colors from greens to reds.

I have attempted to grow hibiscus here several times, even inside the GH and not much success. It ether gets too dry or too cold over here.

I have grown a hibiscus in my sun room for the last 8 years. Every couple of years I bring out on the deck for the summer, and give it a prunning. It blooms nicely for me indoors. It normally resides on the top of the 6' tall TV cabinet. I also have a 12 foot ficus in the center of the room.

Ron, You are making your entire house a jungle, aren't you? I have a ruffled red hibiscus indoors and a small hedge of lavendar Rose of Sharom shrubs outdoors.

Laurent, I will have to take a pic of the room to share..I designed and had built an addition. part of it is the 2 story sunroom, cathedral with 8 skylights and 2 walls of glass.

Pretty pictures Ron! Rose of Sharon never fails to impress... I used to work at a garden center in Lake Zurich IL, and the Rose of Sharon cultivars were some of our best-selling perennials...people just loved them, and we could barely keep them in stock! The dinner-plate sized hibiscus plants were the same deal...they used to come in red, pink and white, and man were they impressive!!! I believe back in '04 when was when they were first hitting the market, and we used to sell 10" pots of them for about $20...I wonder what they cost now! We couldn't keep those in stock either, LOL... (I only know because I was the one constantly lifting the pots to refill the benches!!)
