A second flower opened on each of the new phals this morning. I was examining the DeLeon with ruffled petals, and discovered a strange little "nose" or protuberance on both petals (the three anterior petals are called Sepals and they are normal). I'm guessing this is a "Peloric" phal, which is to say it's petals turn out as Labellum or partial Labellum. Mine apparently did a 1/2 and 1/2 on the labellum/petal thing and gave me a ruffled appearing petal. Upon closer examination I also noticed the edges look as if they tried to make the "whiskers" you see at the end of the labellum, but they didn't elongate. That is actually what gives the illusion of the petals being ruffled. What a strange and amazing flower. I was actually suprised that the 2nd flower looked exactly like the first. I was sort of wondering if the rest of them would be normal looking. I'm so glad it's all going to look like this....so interesting!
Here's some pics of what I was describing....anybody else have any cool orchid anomalies?? I love seeing the strange ones.... I tried showing how far that little thing sticks up off the petal but my camera just isn't sensitive enough (translation: i was too cheap to buy a really cool camera).
Thanks for looking....Connie![]()
