    BD, I rarely stake any spike regardless of the genus unless necessary. I have found that the earlier you stake a flower spike the weaker it becomes. I may support the spike if like Odonts or Oncids or even Phals ( not much practice there ) only because the spikes can't hold the flower quantity or weight so you have to.
