I Confess

I am embarrassed to let anyone see this very messy area, but you guys have given me the incentive to finally get to work out there. No, it's not an orchid growing area yet, but it's going to be, and I'll try to remember to post progress as I go along. Ever since Hurricane Wilma, it's been a sort of storage room for all the "stuff" I have no room for elsewhere (my wall to wall master bedroom closet still hasn't been replaced). Today I realized that most of that "stuff" can go out in the trash, since I haven't looked at, nor used any of it in years.

The room is about 13 x 7, and the windows you can see face south.

In the area by that right hand window, my mom used to grow beautiful African Violets. They loved that little corner, and I'm hopeful that orchids will love it too.

You can't see it, but sitting in one corner is a very pretty fountain I bought years ago, but haven't really used. That will be part of the project I think, as I want to turn this indoor room into what looks like an outdoor beautiful orchid garden. Okay, so I always start out with ideas that may or may not ever happen, but it's nice to dream.

Anyhow, this is the start:

Renovation is a four letter word!!

After the storm, my neighbor and I had no wall between our kitchens, and all that was left there were her fridge and mine. It was not something I would ever want to go through again.

As for the room, it can get very bright, but those bamboo rollups make lighting very adjustable, since they can also be lowered from the top (like the old time schoolhouse shades). There's also a ceiling fan, but I need to get new blades for it, since one broke (during the storm I think). And, there's also an air conditioner, but it only seems to keep the floor cold.

So, I think the space can be very adaptable to what I want to do with it. I think the biggest problem will be getting the humidity just right.

And thank you for not screaming in horror at the sight of that mess.

When you get ready to "renovate", you should consider using a large barrel to collect your air conditioner water, or place a nice rain barrel somewhere...the orchids love rain water and a/c water. Having a cool floor may be a bonus as clay pots sat on shelves over a cool floor may help with humidity inside, and a new ceiling fan blade will help the cool air circulate. You have a totally perfect set up for orchids there. The bamboo shades will give a "dappled" shade effect that can be increased or decreased as the heat of the sun increases this summer. Too cool...i'm hoping to build something similar onto my house soon. Your little room is perfect.

It looks to me like you will have a nice place when it is done. That so call mess you have is nothing. We did a remodle job here 3 years ago and had to move almost everything out of the house. We have been in this house for over 40 years and we had a lot of junk. 7 of the largest dumsters you can get went out of here. Some of that was old building material but a lot was junk. When the house was done (7 months later) we still had a lot of junk that was to good to throw away. We had a garage sale and made 2000.00 on our junk. The garage is still full of junk for another sale. I have one excuse for all the junk. We have dealt in Antiques for the past 30 years and you always keep that odd part cause someday you may need it.

That will be a great orchid room. I bet the fountain will look so cool in there with all of your orchids and other tropicals around it. Keep us posted on your progress!

what mess? our dining room and lounge are 10 times worse than that as my hubby is a hoarder, everything could 'come in useful one day' *sigh* I dont get a lot of tidying done due to my illness so we live in an explosion lol, that is going to be a perfect orchid room, I am going a little green around the gills here! I am sorry to hear of the devastation from hurricane wilma lets all hope and pray for a quiet hurricane season this year.

I haven't made a lot of progress with my orchid room yet, but have managed to clear out one little corner, and put some of my kids out there. It is now about 12:20 in the afternoon, and as you can see, there's some sun, but hopefully not enough to burn up the plants, especially the Phal. I just moved that Phal out there, and will keep a close eye on her to make sure she's happy and healthy and not getting a sunburn. I'll also be watching that little yellow Catt that I won at the society a few days ago. She was hanging next to the big one, and I just hung her from that table today.

Now I can't wait to get more out there. I'm holding off on my Blc. Hawaiian Leopard since its bud is opening and I don't want to move her. Same thing goes for my Phal. Baldan's Kaleidoscope.



I'm getting the rest of the sofa cleared off today!! I love being able to sit out there, next to my beautiful orchid babies.

Hmmmmmmmmm... guess I'm going to have to get someone to get rid of and replace that solar film on the windows, huh?
