My first orchid death.

Looks like my flowering size Paph Gary Romagna is going to bite the dust.
The new growth that rotted(probably due to me getting water in the basal leaf axil ) has spread to all the leves .
I,ve removed 2 & treated with fungicide but it looks like a bleak outlook.
I,ll have to buy a replacement as i really like this Paph.
In future NO spritzing the Ppahs.
Oh well cest la vie!

awww, sorry to hear about the impending loss... if it helps any, I've killed hundreds, maybe thousands... well it feels like it.. I have a phalaenopsis that is doing much the same thing, ie i got water in the growth axil and it rotted and now... well now the rest is going yellow...

well, each one is a learning experience aye. I think water including spraying ie misting late in the day especially on a cold day is a definite no, no...

That bites, Steve. If you had neglected it, that would have been one thing, but killing one with kindness is a lot harder of a pill to swallow, I think.

Yeah...killing with kindness...I have some relatives like that. It would be much less guiltifying to avoid them if they were just mean every now and then.

HEY HEY HEY!! Don't give up so soon! I had crown rot in 6 or 8 of my better and larger complexes and saved them all. I may have lost this year's blooming but the plant was saved, sometimes with two new leads showing! I'd be glad to post photos of saved plants if anyone is interested.

I moved them inside the house where they were a LOT dryer. Some I repotted into s/h. Regardless, just because the new growth rotted doesn't mean the plant won't "activate" another dormant growth. I just bet this will work for you too!

I am trying to avoid overhead watering for all orchids, if possible. I like to water early in the day, as we have been told for ages, and be sure the plant dries out before lights out, especially if the air is cool. This ties to the thread on "how many plants is too many"... The more plants you have the less individual attention you can give them. For most big time commercial growers they simply can't afford to water every plant individually like most hobbiests can.

oh no.... being the pessimist.. i chucked out the phalaenopsis with the crown rot and the leaves going yellow... umm, when do we know if it is definitely a gonner or if the plant may still send out a side shoot?
